Two

Somehow, a year has past since I closed out the first year of my son's life, since I processed the end of his baby year and the start of all that would come next in anticipation of his first birthday. Which means that, somehow, two years have passed since that amazing day when I first held him in my arms and couldn't sleep lest I miss even a second of his precious life.

Because today he turns Two.

For the past several weeks "two" has been his favorite number and one of his favorite words. He'll have two blueberries, two pretzels, enjoys his two eyes and two eyebrows. He's old enough now to get excited in advance about birthdays and parties and cake and presents. If I thought the baby days were leaving us behind last year, they are clearly long gone now.

My son is Two.

When he was a newborn, I would hold him in my arms and wish the moment would last forever, dreading the time when he would no longer have that newborn sweetness, when I would lose that head-over-heels feeling of new and miraculous love. But what did I know? Those days may be long gone, but my son has burrowed as deeply into my heart as ever. He is as precious and lovable at two as he was new born, and I love to be with him as much now as then.

But this year, this two-year, thing are changing. Speaking of "two" there are two now. Two children that I have, though one is still hidden from view.

And as we found out yesterday at our ultrasound...we have two boys.

Its true! We're having another boy. The ultrasound experience was amazing, a chance to see and meet our son for the first time. He was wiggling around as always, and at one point we had a great view of his hand, all five fingers, waving to us - open, shut, open, shut. Amazing.

Its easier to be aware of this child, now that I've seen him, now that I can picture him as a boy. Now that he's moving all the time - as the ultrasound tech said, that's a very busy boy! I seem to make them busy.

So happy second birthday, A. I hope you love being a big brother.

Congratulations on two boys. I just had a second son in April and I can't wait to see them grow up together. My baby is already changing so fast that it's almost heartbreaking, but I (and you) have so much to look forward to. The boys are 3 years and 3 days apart, so a bit more than yours.
